What Makes me Odd

My class has been reading 'A Wrinkle in Time'. We were looking at the author's messages. We worked out that one of them was that 'being odd is a good thing'. So we did a follow up activity about what makes us odd. I have alot of things that are very odd about me so I found this easy. :)

Over the past few weeks we have been reading a book called The Green Book. As part of a follow-up activity we had to name the problems in a type of map and the solutions.

My Reading Challenge 2016

This is my reading challenge for 2016. There are lots of different categories. Each category, I have to read a book. For example, one is 'A book with a one word title', so I had to read the book 'Thirst', well, I didn't have to. But you get the idea. At the end of the year I have to read a book from each category. I like reading and I am ahead of most people in the class at the moment. It's a really fun challenge but a bit hard.

Identifying Bias

I chose these parts because Koro Apirina was mad at Kahu when she couldn't help it. They seemed unfair and 'bias'.

My Reflection:

I am learning about Bias. In this activity I had to find the parts where Koro Apirana was angry at Kahu for no reason. This activity was easy and fact even though I wasn't at school on the main day that we learnt about it. My next step is to find the non-bias and make the activity more challenging.

The Whale Rider - Venn Diagram

This is my Venn Diagram for The Whale Rider.

It was a little tricky to think of ideas because we didn't read that much of the story, but at the same time it was easy aswell because I have done heaps of Venn Diagrams over the past year or so. My next step is to get more ideas down and to be more focused on the activity.

My Reflection:

I have been learning to find adjectives, adverbs and similes in stories. I read  Thumbelina. Then I made a list of all the similes, adjectives and adverbs. This was a reading activity. It took a while to read the whole story and stop to write down the words onto my list, but it was the story wasn’t that bad, I guess. My next step is to add adjectives to my own stories.

Bias and Different Point Of Views

     Women Takes A Stand!                      No Oxygen Left On The Planet!

After years of people realising that chopping down trees was a bad thing, a woman made an astonishing statement; “What about the need to build houses in the future? We need to chop down more trees to do that!” The government agreed, and as more trees were chopped down every second, more houses were built, everything so far was going in the right direction.

After the government decided to get rid of more trees, we also lost more food, more oxygen, more plants. Scientist calculate that if this goes on for much longer, everyone will be forced to a new planet, taking more plants and trees, before their the planet gets polluted! But lots of new houses are made for the future, thanks to our ‘Chopping Down Trees’ service.

My Reflection:

I have been about Bias and looking at different point of views. I didn't find this activity very easy at first, I had to go through a presentation about it. I had to write a type of article about something then something else, the same topic, but a little more negative or positive. My next step is to write something about a bad thing then it turned out to be good!

Fact or Opinion Follow-Up

My Reflection:

I have been learning about fact and opinion. This activity was easy because we have done fact and opinion earlier in the year and I know the difference. In this activity I had to tell the difference between the facts and opinions. This activity didn't take me that long because I already knew most of the answers just like that. My next step is to write something and maybe highlight the facts and opinions.

Finding Facts Challenge

My Reflection:

I have been learning about finding information for "KiwiKidsNews". I found it very hard to find out information because nothing really told you when it happened so I couldn't use it. I found it easy to do the "My Summary" because I could easily make connections and thoughts in my head. I enjoyed this activity, even though it took me almost 1 day. My next step is to find information about different things on different websites.

Kensuke's Kingdom-Parent Interview

My Reflection:

I have been learning about the book Kensuke's Kingdom. In the book a child named Michael goes overboard a boat. We have an activity to do about this, we had to make up 5-8 questions to ask his parents, then we made our answers up. I did it with a partner, this is on her blog as well. :)

Kensuke's Kingdom, Chapter 2: Water, Water Everywhere

My Reflection:

I have been learning about the book Kensuke's Kingdom, this week I have read Chapter 2. Along with reading it there are activities to do. Above are my activities that we had to fill out. I think this activity was really fun but I loved the activity about the turtle facts the most! That was REALLY fun!!! :)

I really enjoyed this, next week I think we are doing Chapter 3 since last week we did Chapter 1. I'm really looking forward to it and it will go right here on my blog as soon as I have finished it!

Comparing Characters

My Reflection:

I have been learning to compare my own characters with other characters. The image has two circles, one is for my character and facts about him and the other is for another character and in-between is what they both have is what they both have in-common. This didn't take a while to do but it took a really long time to figure out how to put it on my blog so I hope you enjoy.   :)

Charlotte's Web Making Connections

My Reflection:

I have been learning to do a Venn Diagram from Charlotte's Web called Making Connections. This shows what describes Wilbur and describes Charlotte. This was easy because we have been reading Charlotte's Web and know a lot about these characters.

I have been learning to write positive things and negative things about living things. This was a little to hard to think but turned out alright in the end. This may be helpful to you in the future and I hope you like this piece of work.
